Beaded Bangle, Cameroon

The Tikar is a blanket term for several ethnic groups in Cameroon. These Tikar bangles are made out of clay and are covered in beads that are pressed into the clay. Historically, beads were used to show status and were believed to have protective properties. These bangles are not only used as jewelry, but are also sometimes used as a form of currency, often used to pay a dowry.
