Kwele Mask II, Congo
The Kwele people believe in witchcraft and blame all of their misfortune on its influence. They protect themselves against witchcraft with the ‘beete’ ritual – this ritual involves purification by the spirits. Kwele masks are worn during the ritual and represent the antelope whose flesh is eaten at the end of the ritual.
