Punu Mask II, Gabon
The Punu mask, carved by Punu men, represents idealized female faces. The white used on the masks symbolizes peace, God, spirits of the dead and the afterlife. The Punu masks with black faces share the same stylistic characteristics as the white masks and are believed to have a judiciary function and are able to identify sorcerers.
